The Problem
Cannabis is the most abused federally illegal drug in the U.S. and has been shown to severely increase one’s risk of developing mental health disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and cannabis use disorder.
However, the product continues to be marketed as a natural, safe, and in some cases beneficial product, despite research showing otherwise. This idea is reinforced by the recent surges in legalization that lead people to believe cannabis is without the inherent risks it possesses.
The general public is not aware of the dangers that come with marijuana use, in particular to your mental health.
According to the CDC, recent research found that approximately 3 in 10 people who use cannabis develop Cannabis Use Disorder. The Cleveland Clinic defines Cannabis Use Disorder as “a mental health condition in which you have a problematic pattern of cannabis/marijuana use that causes distress and/or impairs your life.”
The Problem With The Label In New York State
The cannabis label requirements for NY do not have mandatory warnings regarding mental illness. The lack of proper warning perpetuates false ideas that cannabis is safe and results in use without proper knowledge regarding the detrimental mental health risks.

The Marketing and Perception Problem:
“The cannabis industry is increasingly marketing its products for a range of health issues, including anxiety and depression, pain and sleep problems. Some companies also promote their products for general wellness, akin to a multivitamin. A growing number of people use cannabis every day,” according to the Wall Street Journal.
As marijuana becomes more accessible and used by many, it is essential that the government, educators, and individuals make the effort to educate themselves and others on the dangers. Legalization should not replace research and education that allows one to make an informed decision.
